Get Online Week – What Does a Digital Champion Do?

Brendoncare is celebrating Get Online Week with a series of events and activities designed to help everyone feel safer and more confident when going online. Our volunteer Digital Champions will be on hand throughout to guide and support everybody with their digital issues. But who are they and what do they do?

Meet Lorraine, one of our lovely Digital Champions who tells us more about her fascinating life and what motivated her to volunteer for us.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m newly retired from Hampshire Library Service where I worked for eight years. Prior to that, I was a Primary School teacher. I also write: I have had short stories published and have taught creative writing to adults. As well as writing, I love reading, swimming and line dancing.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Brendoncare?

I wanted something in place before leaping into my post work life and found this role on the Brendoncare website. My library job often involved helping people with technology.  I enjoyed being able to make a positive difference this way, so thought it might suit me.

What does your role as a Digital Champion involve?

Trying to answer any questions people have about their phones/tablets/laptops and helping them to do what they need with their devices. It can be quite daunting not knowing what might come up. A lot of common themes are now developing, such as moving and sharing photos, downloading and using apps, and texting. It’s important to figure out exactly what the person needs to do – and sometimes why – because a lot of people don’t know what they don’t know and are amazed at what some of the possibilities are. But there’s no point overwhelming people with things they don’t need, especially right away. I try to break things down into bite-sized chunks that they are more likely to remember.

What do you enjoy about the role and what do you get out of volunteering?

The sense of achievement when I have managed to help someone do the thing they were struggling with is great. Teaching someone in their nineties how to access and send texts is its own reward! At the other end of the scale, I’ve been amazed about just how tech-savvy some members are.  I love the willingness of many older people to embrace digital skills.

What support and training have you received from Brendoncare?

Plenty! There were several useful Zoom sessions before I started, as well as in-person first aid and safeguarding. There are also monthly volunteer catch-up sessions that I try to attend. This is because it’s great to meet staff and other volunteers, and feel part of the team. No problem is too small: staff will always respond quickly to any email queries I have.

What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a Digital Champion?

If you like helping people and know your way around a smartphone and tablet, then give it a go. You don’t need to be an IT expert. I sometimes rely on Google to help solve issues. I am also learning about other makes of phone and tablet to the ones I am used to as I go along! Just be willing to listen and try things and don’t be afraid to say: ‘I’m not sure at the moment but I’ll see if I can find out for you.’ Older people who are trying to be part of the modern, digital world, really appreciate anything you can do to help them achieve that.

Would you like to come and join our team of volunteer Digital Champions? We are particularly looking for volunteers in South East Hampshire/Gosport and Dorset.
