Volunteers Week: Val & Dave

Brendoncare’s community clubs play a vital role in bringing people together, creating spaces to socialise, stay active, and enjoy a wide range of activities. But they simply wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and support of our incredible volunteers.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating two much-loved faces at Otterbourne Hill’s community hub — Valerie Down and Dave Garlick.

Val is very much a driving force behind the hub, so much so, she won Brendoncare’s Community Award earlier this year and was also nominated for the Volunteer Award, both testaments to her tireless work and deep commitment.

From organising activities such as seated exercise sessions and quizzes, to coordinating outings and training sessions, her energy and enthusiasm inspires both members and fellow team members. She also took a starring role in Brendoncare’s 40th anniversary music video.

Always ready to step in at a moment’s notice, Val ensures that everything runs smoothly and that every member feels welcome. Her involvement with Eastleigh Rotary has also opened up more opportunities for members, including trips to The Wheelhouse in Fareham, where they enjoy refreshments alongside a beautiful sea view.

Dave, meanwhile, is the proud recipient of a Winchester Mayor’s Community Award, recognising his long-standing dedication to the community.

As Otterbourne Hill’s ‘allotment king’, Dave spends countless hours tending to the hub’s allotment. Thanks to his efforts, it has become a thriving, welcoming space that members can enjoy — especially during the summer months when its flowers are in full bloom.

For many years, Dave has also supported the social and singing clubs, running activities, setting up sessions, and ensuring everything is ready for members. His kindness, friendliness and commitment help create a safe, happy environment where the wellbeing of every individual is always the top priority.

I love meeting people and it’s really wonderful that I can make such a difference to their day through volunteering here

All our volunteers are an invaluable part of both our community clubs and home services. Their contribution is truly remarkable, and we simply could not run our clubs and give additional help in the homes without their dedication, generosity, and the incredible amount of time they give and it allows Brendoncare to reach more residents and provide a wider variety of meaningful and engaging experiences.
