Burial of time capsule brings Brendoncare’s 40th anniversary celebrations to a close
Brendoncare ended its 40th anniversary year with the burial of a time capsule at one of its care homes. Colleagues gathered at Brendoncare Otterbourne Hill on Wednesday (12th February) where the time capsule was buried in its garden.
The capsule contains photographs, poetry, letters and stories relating to the numerous anniversary-related activities during the past year.
It also includes the stories of the people chosen as the 40 Faces of Brendoncare during the year. These are colleagues, residents, volunteers, club members, patrons and professionals working with Brendoncare, who embody the charity’s values and ethos.
Classic song:
Brendoncare began its 40th anniversary year on 14th February 2024 by releasing a cover version of Stevie Wonder’s classic song I Just Called to Say I Love You, the video and recording made by residents, colleagues, volunteers, and club members. A link to the song, which is still available to buy via Brendoncare’s website, is another of the items in the time capsule.
Foundation:
Established on 14th February 1984, The Brendoncare Foundation was founded by Winchester GP Sir Ronald Gibson, who chaired the BMA (British Medical Association).
Convinced that older people were often let down by the institutions caring for them, he believed they should never have to move into a different care facility should their health fail or mobility deteriorate.
Sir Ronald pioneered the idea of tailoring a full range of care to fit the changing needs of people, always offering care with discretion, respect, and dignity. These principles continue to guide Brendoncare’s work today.
Brendoncare now operates seven care homes across the south of England. Each offers a range of care, comprising residential, nursing, dementia, respite and end of life (palliative).
The charity also runs community services for older people including a network of more than 70 clubs across Hampshire and Dorset, online clubs, digital and telephone support, and special events. These are accessed through Brendoncare’s community membership.
Michael Crutchley, Brendoncare’s Chief Executive, said: “The past year has been a very important milestone for us. It gave us a chance to reflect on the progress we have made over our first four decades.
Strategy:
“We have been working hard to develop our strategy for the coming years. This will ensure we continue delivering the highest quality care to our residents and offering the best possible experiences for the people using our in-person and online clubs, and community support services.
“Our teams and volunteers in our care homes, extra care housing and community services are totally committed to meeting the ever-changing needs of our residents and members. My sincerest thanks got to them for everything they do to make Brendoncare a vibrant, kind and forward-thinking organisation.”
