Volunteers’ Week – Dr Sarah Hobhouse

This week, (2nd – 8th June) is Volunteers’ Week, during which Brendoncare will be paying tribute to and thanking our incredible team of volunteers who give their time selflessly, making a real difference to people living in our care homes and using our community support services.

Today, we would like you to meet Dr Sarah Hobhouse, who is not only a volunteer, but also a Brendoncare Trustee.

Here, she tells us more about her work with Brendoncare.

“I’ve been involved with Brendoncare for six and a half years, since I started as a Trustee. Before that, I knew about Brendoncare’s care homes but not the clubs and community services we offer.

“As a Trustee, the volunteering I do for Brendoncare is varied. The majority of my input is around committees and board meetings, and the associated reading. This keeps me well informed of everything that’s going on in the homes and community services.

“I’m always impressed with the variety of initiatives and innovations going on behind the scenes. But there are other elements to the volunteering too. They include meeting funders, attending functions and doing a bit of fundraising (walking or at a charity for instance).

“My favourite days are when I visit clubs or a home to meet members, residents and colleagues – particularly the kurling clubs where the inner competitive streak is let loose!

“Memorable moments have been attending the Extra Mile awards and seeing a hard working colleague being given that recognition, as well as seeing people out of uniform and off duty!

“In whatever capacity you feel you’d like to volunteer with Brendoncare, you will find it rewarding, discover something new about yourself, make friends and be appreciated. Go on. Give it a go and start smiling!”
