Meet John - Nurse at Otterbourne Care Home
We celebrate their dedication on International Nurses Day today (12th May) by shining a spotlight on someone who exemplifies these values – Otterbourne Hill’s John Debil, our Brendoncare Nurse of the Year.
John received his award at the Brendoncare Awards ceremony in February, a well-deserved recognition to his outstanding commitment to both residents and colleagues alike.
His journey began in the Philippines, where, when growing up, John dreamed of being a doctor, but trained as a nurse, working in a hospital for three years.
John came to the UK in 2013, becoming a carer while working for his nurse registration. Completing his Overseas Nursing Programme with the City University of London, John worked at a nursing home for six years, learning a range of skills including palliative care.
He thought it was time for a change when he became a British citizen and joined the team at Otterbourne Hill.
“It was one of the best decisions I have ever made, as from the beginning, I felt that I would enjoy working here. It is a place where I can see myself continuing to grow.”
While much of John’s role at Otterbourne Hill is built on his previous clinical experience, he was asked to support the dementia households, an area in which he initially felt anxious but later realised it was something he loved doing.
“It was quite daunting at first, but now, four years on, I feel much more comfortable and confident working within a dementia setting. Looking back, I feel a real sense of accomplishment and pride. Being able to support someone at the end of their life—to make sure they are comfortable, treated with dignity, and not alone—is something I find very meaningful.”
Above all, John says his work aligns with his own personal values, caring for others especially those who are vulnerable. “I do not just see nursing as a profession but also a vocation.”
For those considering a career in nursing, particularly in older people’s care, John offers honest advice:
“It is not always easy. It requires patience, compassion and resilience. “But it is incredibly rewarding. You have the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives, often at the most important moments. If you are willing to care, to learn, and to give your time and effort to others, nursing can be a truly fulfilling career.”
