Senior Carer Graduates as Nurse Associate

Brendoncare Stildon’s senior carer, Traian ‘Tino’ Onciul, has graduated as a Nurse Associate after completing a two-year apprenticeship while working full-time.

Brendoncare supported Tino as he undertook the apprenticeship in partnership with the University of Chichester, enabling him to continue caring at Brendoncare Stildon in East Grinstead while further developing his clinical skills.

Commenting on his achievement, Michael Crutchley, Brendoncare’s Chief Executive who presented Tino with his Certificate of Congratulations, said:

“We are incredibly proud of his amazing achievement. This is a great example of how Brendoncare, as an organisation, encourages and supports its talented team members to further their careers with qualifications that will enhance their skills. This in turn is of benefit to the residents to whom Tino and his colleagues deliver exemplary care every day.”

Originally from Romania, Tino graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, working as a psychotherapist for several years before moving to the UK with his wife 18 years ago.

“I have always enjoyed supporting people. Care felt like a natural continuation of my interest in understanding and helping others.”

Brendoncare Careers - Tino joins Brendoncare

After working in residential and dementia care homes, he completed NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. Around 10 years ago, he became a senior carer at Brendoncare Stildon.

His responsibilities have included supporting nursing staff, leading shifts, allocating workloads, managing medications, and ensuring consistently high standards of person‑centred care for residents.

While working at Brendoncare Stildon, his interest in nursing grew. Encouraged by nursing colleagues who mentored him on the floor, he began assisting with clinical procedures and sought additional training through the apprenticeship.

Reflecting on his studies, Tino says: “The highlight was the people – my fellow trainees, the incredible university team, and the support from my workplace made all the difference.”

Balancing study, work, and family life presented challenges, particularly while caring for a six‑month‑old baby and a 12‑year‑old child, but strong support from managers and colleagues helped him succeed.

Tino adds:

“From the very beginning, Brendoncare believed in me. The opportunity, the encouragement, and the ongoing workplace support made this possible.

“Even on the most challenging days, the work is never boring. Brendoncare places people at the centre of everything: training, care quality, and genuine person‑centred values. Over the years, it has truly become my family.”

Tino explains how graduating has changed his role at Brendoncare Stildon.

“I have much more confidence in my day to day dealing with my colleagues. On a personal level, it has re-lit my fire and thirst for more and as a result, I will try to continue increasing my knowledge and qualifications.”

To anyone considering a career in care, Tino says:

“Caring is about making a difference in someone’s life. Whatever the setting, it touches everyone involved on a deeply personal level. It can be challenging, but the satisfaction it brings is something few other careers can match.”
