Our History
In the 1950s, Winchester philanthropist Phoebe Bacon gathered ageing friends to live with her at her home, “Brendon”.
Inspired by her vision, Sir Ronald Gibson, a Winchester GP, founded The Brendoncare Foundation in 1984.
Convinced people were often let down by the institutions looking after them, he believed that people should never have to move should their health fail or mobility deteriorate.
He pioneered the idea of tailoring a full range of care to fit the changing needs of people, always offering care with discretion, respect and dignity.
These principles continue to guide our work today.
40 Years of Caring - Charity Single
To mark our 40th anniversary on 14th February, we are really excited to share with you a recording of residents, volunteers and colleagues singing their cover version of Stevie Wonder’s classic song I Just Called to Say I Love You.
We all thought this was such a suitable song to sing to celebrate Valentine’s Day as well as our anniversary.
To us, the lyrics of this song totally sum up what Brendoncare does every day in helping to improve the lives of older people.
This is a very special project, a first for Brendoncare, which was so much fun for all those involved.
Our Patron
Brendoncare is delighted to have HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh as its Patron. The Duchess became our Patron in 2003 after the death of HM The Queen Mother, our first Royal Patron.
