Volunteers’ Week – Anthony Platt

To celebrate Volunteers’ Week this week, we pay tribute and say thank you to Brendoncare’s volunteers, some of whom have skills that they are happy to share such as helping our community members get online.

Anthony Platt is one of our growing team of volunteer digital champions, who regularly gives help and support with any tech issues at Otterbourne Hill Digital Café. He was one of the volunteers who attended its launch in June last year.

We asked Anthony to tell us more about his volunteering journey.

When did you first become involved in volunteering?

“I started volunteering when I retired in late 2023. The one thing I’ll say about that is that it is never too late to volunteer. I worked in IT and felt it would be a good thing to utilise my knowledge to help others overcome their digital challenges.”

What motivated you to start volunteering?

“I was motivated to start volunteering by the thought of helping others and the potential satisfaction from seeing others benefit from my time.”

What is your favourite part of volunteering?

“My favourite part of volunteering is simply meeting people, listening to them, and seeing the benefit of spending time with them. As a Digital Champion Volunteer, it is great to see members improve their digital skills, however big or small that may be. The gratefulness of members in helping them is really satisfying, as I had hoped when I started volunteering.”

What would you say to someone considering volunteering at Brendoncare?

“If you are someone thinking about volunteering at Brendoncare then it’s never too early, or as in my case, too late to start volunteering. The rewards of volunteering will be beneficial to yourself as well as to members. Simply volunteering your time, in whatever way (driving, helping at clubs, phone support, etc), is all it really takes. You will experience the shared enjoyment of volunteering, as well as learn more about yourself and others to the benefit of all who know/meet you.”

His message to anyone thinking of volunteering is.

“Don’t put it off – start volunteering now.”
